چکیده

Oehrle (1994) introduced a categorial grammar architecture in which word order is represented using the terms of a typed λ-calculus and the syntactic type system is based on linear logic. In this paper, we use a variant of this architecture, similar to λ-grammar (Muskens 2003, 2007b), to analyze interrogatives in English and Chinese. We show that separating word order (phenogrammar) and syntactic combinatorics (tectogrammar) in this way brings out the underlying similarities between different question-forming strategies, with phenogrammar identified as the locus of cross-linguistic variation. In particular, the difference between wh extraction (overt movement) and wh in situ (covert movement) turns out to be purely phenogrammatical.

The Phenogrammar of Coordination

Linear Categorial Grammar (LinCG) is a sign-based, Curryesque, relational, logical categorial grammar (CG) whose central architecture is based on linear logic. Curryesque grammars separate the abstract combinatorics (tectogrammar) of linguistic expressions from their concrete, audible representations (phenogrammar). Most of these grammars encode linear order in string-based lambda terms, in whi...

Hyperintensional Semantics in A Higher-Order Logic with Definable Subtypes

Higher order grammar (HOG) is a linguistic formalism that aims to combine the advantages of existing constraint-based formalisms (such as HPSG) and proof-theoretic ones (such as categorial grammar) by using higher-order logic (HOL) as the description language; the underlying intuitionistic type system plays a role analogous to that of a categorial type logic, while the classical higher-order te...

Tectogrammatics, Phenogrammatics and the Architecture of the Grammar

In a now famous paper [1], written mainly in the 1940’s but published in 1961, Haskell Curry makes a distinction between the grammatical structure of a language and the way this grammatical structure is represented in terms of expressions. The structure proper he calls tectogrammatics and its representation is called phenogrammatics. More precisely, the paper starts with phrases of two types (S...

Features in Abstract and Concrete Syntax

The division of grammars into abstract and concrete syntax is universally used in compilers. In linguistics, Curry’s distinction between tectogrammar and phenogrammar is a similar idea. This architecture has become popular in recent years, exemplified by formalisms such as GF, ACG, and HOG. These formalisms give a perspective on language that is very different from the perspective in feature-ba...

Tectogrammar-based machine translation for English-Spanish and English-Basque

We present the first attempt to build machine translation systems for the English-Spanish and English-Basque language pairs following the tectogrammar approach. Based on the English-Czech system, we describe the language-specific tools added in the analysis and synthesis steps, and the resources for bilingual transfer. Evaluation shows the potential of these systems for new languages and domains.
